This study examines the economic impact of spousal death in a developing country context, using panel data from Thailand and a staggered difference-in-differences design. We found that widow households experienced a decline in non-household transfers, while widower households did not. Despite this, both groups maintained stable earned income and staple consumption through several coping mechanisms. Widows took over household businesses, while widowers reduced work. Both cases relied more on children through increased coresidency. Widow households also received temporary inter-household transfers. Results suggest survivors primarily depend on informal support, underscoring the need to strengthen formal safety nets.
